Vivisection, 2018
Our language is full of medical metaphors, especially in the context of getting to know someone intimately. She “opened up,” he “bared his heart,” they knew each other “inside and out…” Vivisection is about opening up, especially after experiencing heartbreak. Through its delicate trauma, its peaceful pain, Vivisection invites the viewer to open up in the face of experiencing even more damage.

They say eyes are the windows to the soul. Interestingly to neuroscientists, the retina is technically part of the central nervous system. So, remember: when you’re looking into someone’s eyes, you’re really peering into their brain.
Both pieces, alongside the more recent Antemortem (see Projects), were displayed at the Small Works Show XI at the Modbo in Colorado Springs. Originally, both pieces were made as part of a series for The Brain and Creativity, a Colorado College art show. For the other works in the series, see The Connection and Brainbow.
