Witches is inspired by the link between witchcraft and sexuality, emblematized throughout history (particularly in Europe) by the public burning of queer men and women at the stake. Each panel represents an aspect of queer love, and attempts to entangle the interplay between public and private understandings of affection.
I created this piece early in my journey of self discovery. I wanted to portray some of the dark sides of queer love, ones compounded by toxicity within and without my relationship. (Eventually it became impossible to disentangle the two, within and without.)
The titles of the pieces are meant to be semi-interchangeable. The characters are disturbingly intertwined, such that it becomes difficult to tell where one body ends and the next begins. Radioactively bright colors finish off the piece, lending it an air of danger.
